brakes sound like a train horn

 

take it to a brake shop, tire store or a dealer for inspection.

My dad was driving a van with big time brake noises and the pads were long gone and rotors chewed up. Unsafe.

 

might be worn out?

 

Brakes have a warning "scratcher" that contacts the rotor when brake pad has about 1/16" remaining. It makes a squealing, scratching sound that is quite annoying and goes away when brakes are applied.

Sounds like system is working to alert for service.
