Hi, I have a 2001 Accord LX 4dr 4cyl and I was wondering if anyone had trouble with their wheel studs. When I say trouble, I mean them stripping/breaking off.

The reason I'm asking is because this is the 3rd time I need to replace them. I already had to replace all 8 studs on the front (1 broke on each side, so I just replaced them all). Now, one of my rear studs stripped & I'm thinking of just replacing all the studs on both sides.

My good friend has a '99 Accord LX 4dr 4 cyl and he also had to replace the 8 studs on both sides (front).

Could it possibly caused by my rims? I have a 17in Racing Hart C2's on it, but the problem happened to my friend even before he slapped on his 19in rims.

Is it only our cars or has this happened to anyone else? Anyone have an explanation to this? Please help!

 

It's not a common problem. Usually caused by overtightening the lugs.

 

I don't really tighted the lug nuts too tight, just "hand tight," but not too loose. Tight enough to keep the rims on the car and not loose for them to come off.

As to the shops, they use impact guns that make the lug nuts way too tight to take them off. So, I'm thinking overtightening is out of the picture. Thanks for responding though.

 

Try torqueing them to 80 ft-lbs. You'll have fewer problems.

 

sounds like overtightening to me too. Those impact wrenches will overtighten them real fast...

 

How do I know when it's torqed at "80ft-lbs?" Remember now, I don't know too much about cars.

 

You have a torque wrench in your tool box? If not ...then go to AutoZone and rent one, they will explain to you how to use it...
