broken trans?

Default broken trans?

i have a 89 accord with a 5spd trans but when i put it in 5th there nothing, its fine threw all the other gears, it grinds a lil when i go to put in in reverse butwhat can i do to fix this do i have to replace the trans or do i have to rebuild? i really dont wanna rebuild. how hard is it to change a tranny. what could have caused this and also my clutch slips a lil and i wanna up grade to a performance clutch any suggestions? also do i have to upgrade anything else along with the clutch?

So... when you shift to 5th it acts like neutral?
Or when you say *nothing* what does that mean?

You have to remove the tranny in order to change the clutch anyway, so you'll have to open it up at least to figure out whether its a broken 5th-gear shift fork or worse damage.

5th gear is under the end cap of the trans. Typically total 100% lack of lube causes the gear to self destruct; it is splash lubricated by the differential gear slinging oil up to a trough that lets oil trickle over/down to the gear.
The gear set can be replace with the trans in the car.
Just remember when removing the shaft nuts,that as you look at the end of the trans, the shaft to your right is left hand thread, the one to your left is right hand thread.
But if you are dropping the trans to replace the clutch, stand the trans face down and go after the gear set.
