Default California state exhaust

My 96 accord 4 cyl., 4 door, auto, and a/c, came from the state of California. So the exhaust system is different than Pennsylvania's as far as emissions go. If i replace the two cat converters to just one will that harm my engine in any way? One is $400 & the back is $300. I would like to avoid that expense should the need to replace one or both arise.

The car originally only came with one converter.

You can check the Honda service manual and Honda dealer parts sites. There isn't two converters on a 96.
