Default Can I use STP powersteering fluid in my Honda Accord 1987 LXI?

A mechanic at Walmart warned me that would be disastrous becuase Honda is the only car make that will only accept its own kind of power steering fluid level. I call baloney on his comment. Is this really true? Would STP fluid not work just as well? The one he recommended me was like 12 dollars where as normal STP powersterring fluid is like 3 dollars.

Personally...NO. Do not use any PS fluid unless it is Honda/Acura approved. I buy Valvoline (HPS12) for my cars- @ $4 or so for 12 oz-hence the PN quoted-Honda, Power, Steering, 12 oz.

I had a friend that used "regular" fluid in thier 3rd gen....ended up replacing two r&p, after the "new"/first rack went bad -two weeks after replacing-they relaced it with another one and changed the fluid. Been fine since????

If not Honda brand PS fluid, at least the bottle has to say "FOR HONDA". Several brands make PS fluid "FOR HONDA". I wouldn't be surprised if STP makes some too but it's not real common on walmart shelves. But DO NOT USE anything that says "for all makes/models".
