Exclamation Car Idling up and down and choking

Ok so i bought an old 93 Honda accord 4 dr so i can fix it up. Soon after the check engine light started coming on at random times after driving it less than a mile or more along with quickly idling up and down from 1 to 1.5. At first it also had some accelerating issues but now seems like its chugging/choking/some backfire as if its gonna sputter out and die I have taken it into the mechanic 3 times now and it STILL hasnt been fixed. I cannot afford to pay 300 or more each time anymore and want to finally get to the root of the issue this next time i bring it in. Here is what has been done on it so far.

First time - Spark plugs and wires oil contaminated from valve cover leaking so replaced spark plugs, valve cover gasket, ignition wires, distributor cap and rotor

Second time - Inspected vehicle for misfire. Replaced water pump and relay, pump and pneumatic system and another relay

Third time - Check engine diagnostic. Performed scanner diagnostic replace distributor and oxygen sensor

Anyone have any clues as to what else it could be??? New to this board btw and thanks in advance for the help

You can check the codes for free, see the Common DIY Threads at the top of this section for how to (all you need is a paperclip and 10 minutes of time)....We'd really like to know the actual code(s) is before "guessing" and you end up spending more $'s

EDIT: I could name name 50 things as a guess, you are getting a CEL code....always follow the codes before assuming........

Code 43 usually means faulty O2 sensor. If sensor is old or unknown age, they are available at very reasonable prices on ebay, rockauto, amazon, etc.

good luck

Can I still get the codes if the CEL is not on?
Yours sounds different, you can check for codes. If there are none then start with a few ideas:

1) Any recent work done to the car?
2) Check coolant level, be sure the bleed air out.
3) TB Cleaning
