Side note: when you turned on the car to test the fans and they both came on was your A/C or Front Defroster on?

Wish I could tell you but when I bought the car the AC didn't work. I tried fixing it but finally gave up. I ended up taking off the belt.

was the button for the A/C or defroster pushed in? That would cause both fans to turn on.

I think so. My car wouldn't heat up so I pushed in the defrost turned the fan all the way up and engaged the rear defrost as well.

turning on your heater actually helps cool the car (if your car starts to act like it's going to overheat turn your heater on full blast), Having the defrost on will cause both fans to come on

I realize that. It did seem to help. It may have been the defroster and headlights that really pushed it over the edge.
