Carb problems?

Carb problems?
OK here we go again new post on an old subject.I've posted in the past as to what I thought was a carb problem, rust in the tank problem.Well it seems when all my problems started I ran my car low on gas and I'm pretty sure this was the cause of my stalling even though I never ran out of gas it kept stalling when it was low on fuel, not necessarily when my reserve light came on but even when I was close to it.To add to my problem the dealer that I took my car to said I had rust in the tank so I was running the tank low all the time and my stalling persaisted. What an idiot ,I never put 2+2 together until after I checked the tank myself for rust.I ordered a new tank ,took the old one out and found no rust so I put new straps on the old tank and put it back in.Now since I knew there was no rust in the tank I filled it up and I haven't had a problem with stalling until I ran the tank to the reserve or there abouts.I filled up again and no stalling.I'm wondering if I may have a weak fuel pump or a weak mind?Any thoughts?

RE: Carb problems?
Yes it could well be a pump problem; when you run low on gas the pump is no longer submerged in the liquid that acts as a coolant, so the pump runs hotter.
The only way to "Prove it" though, is to 'T' in a pressure gauge at the fuel line and run the hose up thru the cowling and duct tape the gauge onto the windshield. then drive it around on an empty tank.

Is it possible to replace the fuel pump without dropping the tank? I pulled the carpet back in the trunk and seen two seperate plugs, approx. 2.5-3" diameter. I haven't tried to pull them out yet and looks like they are only held in by a black sealant.

RE: Carb problems?
I'm going to replace mine this weekend. Decided to buy the whole assembly from NAPA to include the sender. I will let you know if in in fact cures mine. I've been suspecting the pump all along, just never (still dont) have the time to "T" in a gauge so I'm going to take a gamble based on your findings.

RE: Carb problems?
Ok, problem solved for me. I sold the car! LOL! But before I did that, I changed the thermostate, readjusted the timing and lowered my idle. Although the engine was reaching normal operating tempratures, as soon as I hit the high way, the guage would go to "stone cold". Which in turn gave me cool air for my cabin as well as other problems. I only sold the car because I had too many to begin with. Thanks for all your help in the forum.
