Default charging issue on a 89 accord

Hi All:
I hope I put this in the right place.
I have a 1989 accord lx. When I turn the key on the charge light comes on, when I start the car it goes off and don't come back on until I shut off the car. It isn't charging. I have checked it at the Battery with the car running and it only shows 12 volts. Also when I pull the fuse for the alternator (in the fuse Panel in car) it dies, also when I pull either positive or neg cable off the battery it dies.
I'm assuming I need a new alternator. I have also checked fuses # 8 and 21 in the fuse panel under the hood, They both check good. Any other suggestions? I need to change the drive axle on the drives side anyway, So I guess it would behoove me to go ahead and change the alternator. Correct..Thank You all in advance...John

Sounds like the alt is bad....there are reports of a bad choke stat causing issues, is this car carb'd?

Why would you change/pull the cv shaft just to replace the alternator? ........I know the answer, beacuse that is what "the book" says. I can tell you this, I've replaced 5~6 alternators on 3rd gen Accords (86-89) and never pulled the cv shaft

Want to know how.....is this a DX, LX or LXi. Also is it a manual or auto trans?

Ok, won't keep it to myself - many others know this as well.

If this is a LXi-fuel injection. Stupid simple. Pull the air filter, remove the filter housing (plastic piece) bolted to the intake. Lift alternator out where this housing is/was.

DX or LX - Carb'd. A bit more to this and auto vs manual add a bit. Pull the hoses from the heater core - if old get new ones - remove alt from bracket - slide along the back side of the engine and pull it out from the top pass side. On the Auto, I think the VSS/Speedo cable has to come out, sorry failing memory but do remember there was something on the pass side of the DX, LX Autos that had to move or come off that were not in the way on the Manual DX LX's......

Either model, that splash sheild with like 20 bolts has to come off. So to me, again done this several times, removing that shield takes longer that the alt change.

Either way, good luck.

Poorman:
Thanks for the reply. My honda is a LX,Carb, with the auto transmission. The drivers side axle is clicking when I make a turn (either way, right or left). So I figured that since I'm having problems with it charging, I'd go ahead and change the axle and replace the alternator at the same time.
I had also read where you could fish it out from the passenger side, but I figured I'd kill 2 birds with one stone so to speak.
What really stumped me was not having the charge light stay on. The light is functioning like everything is fine, but my battery says different(lol). Again thank you for the reply...John
