Default checking auto transmission fluid?

I have a 95 accord 2.2 vtec auto. And I've been getting 10 different ways to check my tranny fluid from a number of different people and different Honda dealerships.

Some say it needs to be running
Some say it needs to be off
Some say it needs to be within the checkering
And some say it needs to be above the checkering to where the flat part of the stick ends

Any help would be appreciated

Why would the dealership tell me it had to be running?

When my family had older American cars, the auto transmission fluid was checked at operating temperature with the car running. Generally, Hondas are not checked with the car running.

You might even get different answers from different people within a dealership.

It shouldn't make any difference in any case. Same amount of fluid returns to reservoir as leaves reservoir to enter AT hydraulic pump, so fluid level remains constant. There is a slight change in fluid level caused by warming of the fluid so cold and hot levels are different.

good luck
