Confirming Head Gasket
I recently purchased a 97 LX Accord and noticed coolant loss. I don't see any visible leaks. I haven't noticed an antifreeze smell from the exhaust. Will the newer antifreeze smell like the old antifreeze?
The car starts normally when cold. After it is warmed up it sputters for about 20 seconds after started then seems to run fine.
Suspecting the head gasket I checked compression and get 185psi on all 4 cylinders. I expected to find a low cylinder.
The radiator, hoses & cap look new. The thermostat housing has rtv so
the previous owner recently worked on the cooling system.
Any recommendations on a replacement head gasket manufacturer?
Any to avoid? Can I reuse the head bolts?
I have been told the throttle body, IAC or temp sensor could cause the warm start sputtering.
Thanks in advance for your advice

I had the same symptom on my 94Ex. After a warm startup, engine would miss and then smooth out. Small but noticeable loss of coolant. I pulled spark plugs and found one wet plug after engine was warmed. That was adequate proof for me. You may also be able to smell gasoline smell in coolant.
Chemical test is a good test.
good luck

if u want it to last use Honda parts at least the head gasket ,,,,,you can reuse the bolts,, make sure to clean them properly and to oil them a bit before istalling them,,
while you have the head out, i would do a valve job,,

Chase the head bolt holes before installing head w/ a correct tap to clean the threads. Use air to blow any debris from the holes. Wear safety glasses. This will help achieving the desired torque when tightening.
Notice that two (? not sure if 1 or 2) bolts on the cylinder head near the middle on back side are longer than all the other bolts. Make sure to install them in correct holes.
Get some type of manual to guide your work. The 94-97 manual can be downloaded from links in the Online Manuals DIY faq.
