So here's a general question. I know that the auto trans in the '98-'02 Accords was known to be problematic. I also know that the engine block is basically the same as all the blocks from what, around 1990 onward? Is there some reason that an auto trans from an earlier year that is not problematic couldn't be put in it. I'm sure there is a good reason, but a quick search yielded zilch.

I don't think a Gen 6 computer could operate a Gen 5 trans. Gen 6 automatics don't have throttle control cables; that function must be done electrically on Gen 6's vs. mechanically on Gen 5's. I'd bet there are other differences related to the computer sensing and controlling the trans. If it were possible there'd be a lot of swap posts discussing it, especially considering how unreliable Gen 6 transmissions are compared to Gen 5's.

I would think this swap has to be possible.. Roader has some points.

First, the transmission has to mount to the bock.

The next thing is if the transmission mounts are in the same location to secure the transmission.

The axle shafts hopefully are the same length between the two vehicles. Then the splines would have to match.

I don't know how much different the controls are for the transmissions, as roader pointed out.

I'd go along with Roader. If it bolts up (probably it will) the 98-02 computer won't be able to control the older transmission. Probably breaking new ground to make that work.
