Question Difficulty refueling along with 1457 code

Hello All,
Still working on my daughter's 1999 Accord EX I4. Original problem was CEL came on. Used a scanner from work and ended up with a 1457 code. I cleared the code thinking it was possibly a loose gas cap. She had about an 1/8th of a tank of gas and I told her to fill up today. She called this morning and said that I would have to fill the tank because the gas station pump keeps kicking off and she can only get it filled to the halfway point. I didn't think to tell her to try another pump. She also said that she's had problems previously refueling with the gas pump kicking off prematurely. I've read the previous posts on the 1457 code so I know it's on the Evap cannister side. I also have a service manual for this vehicle so I'm getting ready to start testing the Evap system (purge, two-way, vent shut valves). Has anyone else had this problem - difficulty refueling along with a 1457 code? RTV55

what i have found with code p1457 are,, the vent shut valve, 2 way valve and the evap bypass solenoid valve....... replace all 3 ..
most of the time this code happens because people overfill the gas tank ,, instead of stopping fueling when the pump nozzle clicks, they keep on adding more gas in the tank for 1 reason or another,,

but with either , it has never caused the tank not to fill up all the way ,, just a silly question, the gas gauge works properly correct ?? fuel sending unit ??

I tested the 2 way valve and the evap bypass solenoid valve. They were both bad. I didn't check the vent shut valve but I went ahead and ordered all three. If it wasn't bad now it will be soon. Gas gauge works fine - car runs good. Hopefully the gas fill problem isn't that other vent valve in the tank. You know the one where you have to drop the tank. Now why couldn't they put an access hole in the trunk like they did for the fuel pump? Thanks for your ideas. RTV55

deserthonda,
Have you had any experience with the fuel tank vapor control valve in the gas tank? The service manual says this may be the cause of difficult refueling. But it is connected to the two way valve so maybe if the two-way is replaced it will function properly. RTV55

When I got P1457 in my 1998, it was the vent-shut valve. And it caused absolutely no difficulty refueling.
So you may be on to something with the 2-way valve.

Jim,
I tested the vent shut valve, two-way valve and solenoid. Found that they all weren't working so I'll replace all three. The car is a 1999 so they were all pretty crusty. We live in St. Louis, MO so we use a lot of salt in the winter. Hopefully this will fix the difficult to fuel problem. Looking at the schematic in the service manual the fuel tank vapor control valve is connected to the two-way and the Evap cannister. I took off a bunch of lines to check for bug/spider nests but found nothing. Hopefully these parts fix the problem because dropping the gas tank looks worse than pulling a motor. Have you ever had any experience dropping a tank? I wish they would have put an inspection port in the trunk for the vapor control valve like the one for the fuel pump. I ordered my parts on the Internet so I won't have them until later this week. I'll let you know about my progress. RTV55

P.S. It sure would be nice to have one of those PGM testers that Honda dealers use!

I think they can be purchased, but way too expensive for the normal home do-it-yourself mechanic like me.

And I agree about the tank. Looks like a pain, so I was really glad when I fixed my P1457 without having to drop the tank.

Replaced vent shut valve, 2-way valve and solenoid. Went to refuel and didn't have any problems. I believe the faulty 2-way valve was the culprit on the refueling problem. I was praying it wasn't the fuel tank vapor valve. Thanks everyone for your help with these problems. RTV55
