Default Driving in the dark!!

Hi guys (moderators if this is in the wrong section please feel free to move it)

1988 Honda Accord DX 3-door hatchback. Pop-up headlamps

My instrument panel lights will not come on when the headlamps or the parking lamps are turned on. I have only seen them come on only twice since I've owned the car (over a year now). Here is a list of what I know:

The lights were nice and bright... so I know the bulbs aren't blown.
The fuse is good.
I had a friend tell me it was an illumination control module (it is a black box underneath the bottom steering column cover with no part number but says "illumination control module". I replaced it with one from a junk yard with no luck (it was a $2.50 used part compared to a $120 dealership new part).
I THINK the dimmer switch right next to windshield wiper lever is good because the lights dimmed and brightened as I rolled the **** up and down when it was working.

For those of you who are wondering... No... the air conditioning/heat lights do not light up either in addition to my instrument cluster lights. The brief time that my instrument cluster lights came on last night... the air conditioning/heat lights did too.

I want to say it's a bad ground somewhere... but don't know where to look for it. If anyone has a wiring schematic anywhere or can suggest anything I'm all ears!!!

I don't know how fast I'm going at night and I need help!

Kevin

The spoon site I posted in the online manuals thread in the DIY section has an 86-89 accord shop manual.

Weird lighting problems can be attributed to a bad ground somewhere.

The shop manual should show all of the locations of the grounding points in the engine bay and cabin. I would make sure that they are all clean and secure.

In my case, the ones for the headlights gave me some weird problems with my turn signals and headlights. Cleaning up some rust on a washer and cleaning the threads of a ground bolt on the radiator support fixed my problem.

I also checked on AllData and they don't offer any sort of wiring diagrams r diagnosis procedures.
