ECU Compatibility Replacement
Vehicle: 1996 Honda Accord Lx station wagon automatic 4 cylinder 2.2L
Background:
CEL came on & code P0453 retrieve @ Autozone & verified by mechanic
Mechanic examined and attempted to fix all issues associated with code P0453. Determine that the ECU/ PCM is the issue.
The current ECU/PCM is 37820-POH-L51
The recommended (via Honda's parts website) replacement is 37820-POH-315 or 317. The cost of this ranges from $750 to 1K +. I prefer to find a cost effective replacement part.
Based on my research it appears that other ECM/ECU/PCM part numbers are interchangeable and therefore can also be used. However, I am not certain.
I was told that the 1996 station wagon has an "unique ECM/ECU/PCM" and that putting other ECU/PCM will work but WILL throw a CEL.
I would like to know if any of the following are interchangeable and WILL NOT throw a CEL (if in fact the ECU and nothing else is the problem).
(1) 37820-POJ-A80 or 37820-POJ-A81
(2) 37820-POJ-L51 or 37820-POJ-L52
I searched car-part.com and #1 (A80) is provided however, the mechanic insists it will not work in my 1996 accord wagon lx .
I am at a lost any help greatly appreciated.

Additional Information:
I contacted the place where the potential donor car is coming from and was told it is a LX 97 Wagon with 4-cyclinder 2.2L engine. From what I gather if the transmission, engine and Year match the ECU/ECM can be used.
My 96 wagon is LX with a 4 cyclinder 2.2L engine. So, the only difference is the Year of the car. Is this difference the reason the mechanic says it will not work?

As I continue to research my problem, I am finding the following:
There is more information regarding the EX wagons compared to the LX wagons
There was a warranty extension issued pertaining to emissions but that period has ended so any CEL on that prevents emissions pass will not be covered by Honda.
Side note: It is disappointing that the first major issue I have with this car (since owning it in 2001) is such a perplexing issue.

There are services that advertise on ebay and www to rebuild your ECM. This might be an option also.
An ECU from a 1996 LX Auto should work and may be low cost option, however a quick check of car-part.com shows many options for your SW.
Car-part.com shows a 96 LX auto as a donor to your car.
good luck
