Default Faulty connection?

So about a month ago or more, I replaced my starter and my car started working again. But I've noticed it makes a noise right before it start. The guy at Oreilly said it sounded like a faulty connection. Some other info, the negative terminal had a lot of powdery stuff on it, I cleaned it last month too. And rarely the car won't start unless I take the neg terminal off, clean up and on again. I left the AC on max once while I went to work, this is while the car was off, and I had to turn the A/C off so the car would start. This isn't giving me too much of a problem. But I'd like to know how to fix it.

Kind of a hard one here, my guess.....you need to figure out the connections - they should be clean and tight. Check both ends (three really) of the neg cable (battery, frame, trans/engine). Your comment about the neg cable has me worried that is the issue.

Is the sound coming from the starter?
