Hello, yesterday as Im driving my 90 accord down the road my rpm gauge shot up to 2,000 back to 750 to 1500 then it died. I tried to start it and it would not start unless I floored the gas pedal after about 30 seconds. I have no codes, and I am lost on what it could be. Any help would be great!

 

When the tach shot up like that, did the engine RPM actually change or was it just the tachometer?

 

I'm guessing the engine wasn't really rotating that fast....just the gauge said it was. I make this statement as the ICM sends a signal to the rpm gauge.

So with that said, can you check for a good blue spark at the plugs?

 

I think it could have just been the gauge as I don't remember the engine getting real loud, and I checked for spark and there was none so theirs my problem. I was reading up that their is a ground of the thermostat, i know I replaced that 2 days ago, I don't remember putting on the ground on the housing. Could that ground cause most of my problems?

 

A missing ground could cause those problems. Check that you put the ground bolt back on to the harness.

 

Some autozone-type places can test your ignitor. The flaky tach might have been the last dying gasp of your bad ignitor.

Also look for loose/dirty/corroded wiring connections at the distributor.

 

Thanks for the suggestions. I tested the igniter and it was fine, but it was the ground on the thermostat. Now it starts up every time. Thanks for help.
