Hi everyone,

I have a '99 Accord EX, 4 cyl. VTEC. Wanted to replace the fuel filter, called the dealer and they only sell the mesh filter at the pump intake. However the service manual indicates that the "canister body" (lack of a better term) that the fuel pump and sending unit attach to as being "the fuel filter". The manual shows the mesh filter as well, so thereare actually2 filters as part of the pump/sending unit assembly.
Any clarification on the "canister" filter and procurement will be appreciated.

 

As far as I know, it's only the mesh bag at the pump intake. The 'canister' might be some kind of mounting can inside the tank?

Anyway, that mesh bag isn't a normal sceduled replacement item. Any particular reason why you want to replace it? Low fuel pressure?

 

I measured low fuel pressure, got the P code fault for "lean on bank one", or similar (I have the number and description somewhere), and engine was losing rpm when in D(R)with AC on.
You're correct about the "canister" being the "mounting support" for the fuel pump, sending unit, etc.
Funny part is, I Gumout'ed the mesh and the inside of the canister and the pressure went up some, no more stumbling, just a small hesitation. Some junk came out from inside the canister. Mesh filter looked clean before and after.

Well, sounds like you actually diagnosed it. I was imagining that you wanted to replace it 'just because'...

If there was crud INSIDE the canister, that means it got past the mesh bag? How would that happen? I wonder if it's already caused some erosion damage to the pump?

You'll also want to rule out a pinched fuel supply line as a possible cause for low pressure.

You had to drop the tank to get the pump out, right? Carefully inspect the inside of the tank for corrosion or mud or ??? It must have come from somewhere. Otherwise your clean new filter/bag will just plug itself back up.

 

I removed the fuel pump after removing the service cover in the trunk. Blown area clean, removed the many blots, etc. The tank bottom area looked clean, could not see very well due to location.

Checked the book again, they show that "canister" as fuel filter multiple places in the PGM-FI System section. I bought it from the dealer, and it's published by Honda Motor Co, and covers my car's MY. I am just going to write them a nice letter.
