Default Fuel level sending unit???

Hello my fuel gauge is not very accurate. When i brake or accelerate the fuel gauge moves for example from 3/4 of a tank to 1/2 and when the light indicates empty there still remains another 15 -20 L in my tank. I am about to change the fuel level sending unit but before i do I would lilke to know if there are any other possibilities??? thank you

I'm not exactly sure how to test this but you may want to make sure that it's not either a short somewhere or the gauge itself..

ORIGINAL: Triblade

The light doesn't tell you when it's empty, you can figure that out for yourself when it dies. It's a low fuel light.

OK HERE WE GO AGAIN...........NO YEAR NOR MODEL...........Input year and model on your signature , it will make it easier for members to help you with the correct reply the first time ..

since i do not know year and model I CANNOT give you details on how to remove the sending unit , or test the wiring etc etc...
However i can tell you how to test the sending unit once you have it out of the car ,,

you need a multimeter and chk resistance on the 2 wiring on the left of the raised snap in on the sending unit.. you need to move the plunger as if the tank were empty ( all the way down) 1/2 way,, and full ( all the way up)

resistance should be as follow ..

empty 105-110 ohms
1/2 25.5-39.5 ohms
full 3-5 ohms

if out of specs replace sending unit .. these are for a 96 accord but they should be relatively close to other cars

Every single car that I have had as done this at some point in time and every single time the result to fix was replace fuel sending unit. On a lot of cars it is intergrated into the fuel pump but I believe that it is separte on these cars.
