back in the days oc carburated cars the higher octane fuel did have more cleaners in it. when Fuel Injected cars started appearing on the market, gas companies were pretty much fored to add the detergents to ALL of their grades to help prevent Fuel Injector fouling.....now a days you only need to use the octane recomended by the manufacturer for optimal engine performance / economy.

I'm also concerned about the life of my engine... I've heard that using a fuel with a lower octane than recommended will shorten the life of your engine. Anybody heard this before? Is there any truth to it?

if your engine requires 91 octane and you run it on 87 then you run the rick of pinging and that can kill your engine. However almost all modern FI engines have what is called a "knock sensor" that alleviates this problem at the expense of reduced engine output. As mentioned before your car's engine does not have a knock sensor so it cannot correct for pinging that may occur (highly unlikely since the engine is conservatively tuned) Running a Fuel Injector cleaner through the engine every once in a while won't hurt along with cleaning the intake every couple of years.....

Wrong car my friend 1998-2002 accord V6 will not make any additional power and as a matter of fact, they loose 4hp and 15ft lbs of torque. You are thinking of the '03 and newer accords.....that can make use of the higher octane fuel.

you can look up Car and Driver Nov 01 where the do test a 01 accord V6
I didn't realize that he was speaking of 7th generation V-6's only........... didn't mean to put out bum info.

aalrighty...well i dont have an owner's manual and nowhere on the car does it tell what the minimum octane should be used, just unleaded fuel only. I found that strange that both my manuals said the same thing....so where is 91 octane available just out of curiosity
I doubt that your car calls for 91 octane but if so that is a minimum octane requirement. In other words 91 octane or above.

I am surprised that a 92 Honda would call for 91 octane, but as someone said, this is a minimum number so any gas greater than or equal to 91 will work if that indeed is the requirement. Also, consider picking up a manual on Ebay or find one online somewhere.

in response to who said that the haynes/chiltons manuals are made in england you are right and wrong, theres 2 different publishers one in England then theres also a publishing company is California that makes them for the US cars.

OK, thanks. But still be aware that octane numbers don't match between USA & England/Europe/Japan. USA 87 'regular' would be labeled about 90 or 91 (RON) over there. It's important to know where that 91 requirement comes from, because I don't think any USA Accord ever required 91 AON.
