Default Gas smell in cab when I put gas in tank

Hi,

After I gas up my car usually it is near empty, I smell an odor of gas in the car. This odor normally lasts for a few minutes then goes away. I normally roll down the windows during this time. I’m careful not to spill any gas on me nor step in any gas that someone occasionally spills on the pavement. What could be causing this gas smell after I start the car.?

Thanks

Do you gas up with your vehicle running...?

... or do you try to "top off" the tank by clicking the nozzle again & again? Either one of those can confuse the car's EVAP canister system.

Hi guys,

No, the car is off and the keys are out of the ignition when I gas up. I don't top off, ever. Normally when I put gas in the car the vehicle is near empty and I normally add a third to half a tank. I have filled it up a few times but never top-off the tank. The smell comes after I finish gassing replace the gas cap and then start the car.

Thanks

Check-engine light on? If so, get the code & tell us.

Look underneath the left-side of the car. Five tubes running along under the floorpan. Three of these are fuel lines - are they wet? I had some corrosion (95 Integra) made those lines kinda spongy. They didn't leak big drops, there were no puddles of fuel on the garage floor. But the lines just leaked about as fast as the fuel evaporated so they were always just a bit wet. And smelly.

Hello,

There is no CEL. I checked the lines and did not notice or smell any gasoline. Though if this were the case I would think I would constantly smell gas. I only smell gas after I fuel up and then start the car for a couple of minutes. When I remove the gas gap there is always a sound of pressure releasing.

Happy Thanksgiving

Check the evap hoses in the engine compartment for dry rot or heat damage.
