Default 1993 Honda Accord AT 2.2 LX -- Transmission pink/water Grinding

Friend has a 93 honda accord AT 2.2 2 door

Issues --- Grinds when attempting to put in reverse
Also, I keep flushing this trans (drain, fill, drive, drain, fill, drive) and the fluid keeps turning milky pink.. But the trans cooler is located outside of the radiator --- What gives?

See attached chart, "ratcheting noise when shifting to R". Doesn't look promising for a fix short of overhaul. 94 Accord AT should be very similar to yours.

Regarding fluid condition, if water contamination occurred it may be difficult to clear trans w/ drain/replace repeats as torque converter holds approximately as much fluid as reservoir. A "flush" by removing feed line to cooler, direct fluid to a catch basin, start engine, and displace old while adding new fluid. Tricky to do because pump rate is high. See following link.

good luck

Great info.. question -- what percentage of a chance do I have, if I follow video instructions on a flush, making it work properly again? ie.. being able to shift into reverse and it not grind?

What difference does the probability make? Not much IMO.

FWIW, I would guess low probability, < 10%.

good luck

Ok, so I'm not even going to waste anymore $$ on trans fluid. Just go buy another transmission

So the trans cooler in the bottom of the rad has already been by-passed?

Im guessing so. The cooler is out in front of the radiator all by itself.

I don't have a 93 manual but 94 Accord shows a single pipe loop in the power steering system. You may still be hooked to the radiator AT cooling fittings. These could be source of water in ATF.

good luck

They cut the lines from the radiator and installed this cooler. I just shake my head at this car.

Almost makes you wonder it the OE trans cooler was "leaking" coolant with trans fluid. They by-passed it and now you are the one flushing out the remaining coolant??
