Default High Mileage and Problem Prevention

Hi all,

I have an '03 4cyl automatic that just passed the 200K milestone (hurray)! I bought it with 150 on it and so far have had absolutely no problems with it. I take good care of it and I think the previous owners did as well.

I plan on keeping it until something MAJOR has to be fixed or replaced. Just wondering what are the common issues that Accords run into typically after 200K and what's the best way to potentially avoid them. I do regular oil changes of course, I've heard that radiator flushes help with preservation of the water pump. Nice it has a timing chain rather than belt. Besides having to worry about the tranny going, are there any other common problems that I should be aware of going forward?

Thanks for your input.

Maybe use seafoam and lucas oil additives to help preserve the life of your engine. Maybe some Marvel Mystery oil too, but I dunno for sure. Ask EricTheCarGuy on Youtube, he usually answers the comments.

Here's a video he made giving his opinion on StopLeak which is a radiator additive that is supposed to seal head gasket leaks, ask him here or go to his website:

just acquired an '97 AT accord with 190,000.

I plan on drain and re-fill the tranny every 15,000, since I can do this myself (cheap) -
and so often because only about 40% of the fluid is replaced each time.

How many quarts is the 40%? I have bought 3 quarts and plan on doing my first AT fluid change and don't know the exact amount that I need. I think its 2.5 but im not sure.

You'll need a bit less than 3 quarts for each drain/fill. The TOTAL fluid is about 7 quarts, but the torque converter never drains. The total of 7 quarts is for a dry rebuild.

That's why you should repeat the drain/fill a couple more times IF the first drain fluid comes out very dirty.

engine oil and filter every 4k

normal things you will encounter are bearing, alignment, under body rust,.
so make sure you regularly clean under your car specially if theres heavy salt during winter around your area.
dont forget wheel rotation
and dont treat your car as if it's a race car. you can run into more problems sooner and drain your pocket exponentially ;P

I have a 97 accord and it's at 220k miles or 355k km on the dash. so far only major things i had to get fixed was the break line (done last week) and the A/C which was broken when i got it.
I kept the car's maintenance intact. oil change every 3.5-4k, drain ATF every 15k, balance every 10-12k, wash the car once a week and polish once a month, constantly checking brakes, spark plugs all the fluids etc.
