Honda accord 1999 6 cilinder
Gearbox indicator not working in the instrument panel, light next to the gear lever works
Search the web for CD7_CD9.pdf. This should pull up sites where you can download the 94 accord shop manual (KH model is US accords in this manual). The 94 is almost identical to your 96 execpt for the OBD2 wiring and some other minor items. Just verify the wire colors are the same from the diagrams to be 100% sure.
The gear indicator cluster bulbs get power from the cluster and the ground side of each bulb runs to the gear selector switch. Depending on which gear you select will ground the individual wire of the cluster bulb to light it up. To figure out if you have a power, ground, or selector switch issue, I'd remove the center console and get to the gear posistion switch connector under the gear selector. Unplug the connector, turn the key to the II position and not have the car running. After verifying the wire colors, you can jump the grn/red pin to black (see page 23-165) and see if the reverse light turns on. Essentially you are using the jumper wire to replace the gear switch. You can try on the grn wire for the neutral light and the other wires as well.
If the light turns on, then the gear switch is faulty or less likely not adjusted properly. If the light doesn't turn on, then jump the grn/red wire directly to ground. If the light turns on, there is a bad ground on that black wire. You are just trying to split the circuit in half to figure out if power or ground is missing.
