I know its not good for a car to have rust built up on any part of a car, but Ive been trying to look for a way to get rid of it because it seems like something I can do fairly easily myself. The car spent most of its life up north and apparently the previous owners (there were 6) did not take great care of it. Any ideas?
Also btw, the most rusted part seems to be the exhaust, and im afraid that may cause problems further down the road, i.e. exhaust leaks maybe? The car is nearing 200,000 miles and I would like to keep it going for atleast another 200,000 more. Any advice/tips?

 

there are methods of sanding off rust then using a rust preventing paint to go over the sanded area.

However I wouldn't suggest doing this with the exhaust. Until you have an exhaust leak I wouldnt do anything more than save up for replacement. Do not sand your exhaust system it will do nothing. Exhaust systems will rust (unless they are SS like on some cars)

If you have rust in a wheel well or on other parts of the body thats a different story.
