Default How to use a volt/multimeter?

Ok guys i know nothing about wiring or electricity so bear w me. I have and overheating car and i bought a multimeter to check for 12 volts(thanks to a member here) on the cables to the radiator fans, but the meter has a **** in the middle and a bunch of settings to use, like ohms dc acv all kinds of crap. If you need to see it they have it at harborfreight.com, its the red one thats 3.99, i also bought a 6/12volt screwdriver looking thing that lights up, should i use that instead?, thanks and sorry for the confusion

Whenever you measure voltage with a battery, it is direct current (DC). The number you want is 20, because that means you can read in the 2-20 volt range.

Set the volt meter to DCV 20, and touch the black lead to the - battery terminal, and the red to the + battery terminal. The meter should read around 12 volts.

Measuring the battery like that just shows you how the meter displays the measurement. The real thing is for you to now put the meter probes on the 2 wires that connect to the radiator fan to see whether they are giving power to the fan.
