why don't you search to find out that both items have been covered ..... or at least repeat the question in an appropriate thread. Thread jacking is rude and makes the thread have nothing to do with the title.

Thanks for your future consideration.

I dont mean to be annoying and ask pointless questions about my Honda, but Im pretty interested in increasing my Honda's gas mileage to a higher rate than it is now.

For starters, I drive a 1997 Honda Accord LX with a 5 speed manual transmission, the motor is a 2.2L inline four, but doesnt have "V-Tec" on the valve cover. Dumb question, but does this make it a non-V-Tec motor?

On the highway, I get about 30 mpg, and in the city around 26 mpg. I know by altering when I shift, how hard I press the gas, etc. can increase my gas mileage, but is there any motor mods I could do to really improve its gas mileage? And how about the shift points... when should I really be shifting? Honda has provided me with shift points (in the owners manual) but has anyone found anything else that works better?

Edit: I just looked, and my motor is a F22B2, non V-Tec

Anyways, thanks for any responses!

This is most likely covered in here somewhere, but here goes:

Clean air filter, clean the fuel injectors, fill the tires, light weight synthetic oil, remove extra weight from car, coast to a stop, easy on the gas, avoid traffic delays, program your gps for most economical - not fastest, start the engine and drive easy - don't warm up sitting still.

If you want to cut your fuel bill: use public trasportation, car pool, combine trips, use a gps so you don't get lost, stay home, work from home, move closer to work, buy online, netflix/ppv, walk, ride a bike, call before you drive.

mattthemotorman...
Shift points can go all over the place depending on your motives. For best fuel economy shift real early, like maybe even2000 rpm. Low rpm & moderately open throttle use less fuel vs. high rpm & almost-closed throttle.

But then if you suddenly 'need' to accelerate, you'll have to downshift. That might just discourage you from hammering the throttle all the time, which helps gas some more.

Joshk...
How empty do you go before filling?? Why don't you calculate your actual miles per actual gallons. Fill it full. Drive till it's anywhere near empty. Miles divided by gallons...

03 2.4 I4 EX
I only get about 300 per tank. I calculated ~23.5 running from full to the gas light.
This is a drop from 330 per tank after I had an accident in the snow, requiring a replaced bearing and wheel.

I just bought a 2008 Accord coupe V-6. I'm in love with the car but the gas mileage is not good even with the engine running on less then 6 cyl's. I have just passed break in and I'm still only getting 22 mpg driving it very easy. I would not have bought the car if I had known this and was expecting at least 27 mpg. Any ideas how I can imporve this? Thanks, Bill

EPA estimates combined highway/city to be 22.

If you are getting the EPA, I believe you should be VERY happy. I only get 23.5 in my 4 cyl 2003 sedan. Maybe you should do a little more research next time?

Hi Zion and thanks for the link. That info I already knew so I'll explain in a little more detail for you. I just traded in a 2006 V6 Passat with 280 hp and 265 lbs of torque. The car averaged 26 to 27 mpg. My drive to work is 90% highway so when I saw the window sticker on my newAccord which said28 mpg I thought to expect at least 26 considering the EPA stickers are now supposed to reflect more closely the actual mileage. So now break in is over and I'm getting 21/22 it just doesn't make sense. On my way home from work tonight I stopped in to my Honda dealer and asked a service tech about this. He said it isthe "winter gas" and come summer I'll get better mileage. This doesn't make sense considering my Passat getting 26.5. Personally I think Honda has some explaining to do and I plan on getting to the bottom of this. I can't be the only one seeing this kind of disparity from the window sticker of 28. By the way your comment "I should be happygetting 22" only works for someone who is driving equally highway and around town. I'm going to call some of myfriends that work for Hondain Torrance Ca. and ask them what is going on. I'll post what they tell me. Thanks Bill
