Default Loud Clunk When Shifting from Park to Reverse

Hello Everyone,

I park my Honda Accord 2008 (4 Cylinder) on my driveway (SLOPE). When I put the car from Park to Reverse it makes a very loud clunk sound. Even though my hand brake is ON. There is no sound when I change from Park to Reverse on a flat surface. What is going on?

PS: I do not park on my driveway anymore! I park on the street now because of the clunk sound I mentioned in the post.

You can park on the slope and try this, when you stopped the car, put it in neutral, apply the e-brake and let off your foot brake and let the e-brake locks the wheels until the car stop rolling then put it into Park and shut off the car. When you are ready to go out again, start the car, foot on brake, put it in reverse then release the e-brake and you won't have that "loud clunk" any more. What happen is the park mechanism locks into the park wheel when you are in Park, but because you are on a slope and the parking gear hold the weight of the car to prevent it from rolling downward, when you try to get it back out of park you will get a loud clunk like that, that's normal. But if you have the car's weight holding by the e-brakes, you won't have that clunk any more, try it and let me know.

Check fore/aft motor mounts. I suspect one is damaged.

good luck

@piggylover1985,

Thanks for the help! Yesterday, when putting the car in park. I really lifted the handbrake to full extent. Today when I reversed my car there was no clunk sound. I guess it was making that noise because I was not pulling the handbrake hard enough.

Just remember to apply the e-brake before you put it in park then you won't have that clunking noise again, especially on a slope, less wear and tear for your parking mechanism inside of the transmission.
