Default Low power Accord

1993 Accord
134,000 miles.
Purchased at 91,000.

This thing really has suffered lately in the power category. I am used to American V-8's so I was prepared for sluggish power, however I believe it to be getting worse. With the AC on I need to give it close to 1/2 throttle to make it accelerate at a decent rate.

Not too proficient with newer cars but I am concerned that there are a lot of original pieces on this thing like spark plugs. I think I will start there but I was also concerned that the cat may be choking it off. Any thoughts on this logic?

Thanks.

New Spark Plugs & wires would be a good start. Use NGK plugs. I believe the best are the double plats (Part # PZFR5F-11) but they are expensive at around $11.71 a piece. I would use at least regular NGK platinums (Part# ZFR5FGP) they are a little easier on the wallet at $2.68 a piece. Rumor has it that Honda OEM plug wires are the best performing plug wires you can use.

I would suggest checking timing is set to factory specifcation (15 =/- 2 degrees BTDC, there is a red mark to indicate this setting). You could also remove the upper timing belt cover and check that camshaft is set to TDC when engine timing is at TDC. This would confirm that timing belt is correctly installed. Turn engine and look at timing belt lugs to see if any are missing or damaged.

Make sure you have a clean air filter and no obstructions or damage to the air inlet duct.

good luck
