Default Magnetic Drain Plug and New Engine

Hello All, I just purchased a 2015 Accord V6. This car is AWESOME! I have used magnetic drain plugs in the past on my other Hondas and they seem to gather a significant amount of "stuff," so I believe they are worth installing. I purchased a magnetic oil drain plug and an ATF plug from Dimple Drain Plugs at MAGNETIC DRAIN PLUGS. These plugs are MUCH stronger and more expensive than any other plugs I have seen before. I also like to use Mobile 1 fully synthetic oil. I have heard that the original factory oil is "special" and should not be drained until the 1st scheduled oil change, I guess about 5,000 miles. It also would make sense that during the break in period is when more shavings would be generated from the engine. My question is if I want to use the magnetic drain plugs now should I just try to swap out the plugs as fast I as can and top it off with synthetic oil, do the complete oil/filter change now at 600 miles, or wait to install the plugs and oil change at 5,000 miles?

I still cannot imagine why someone would invest in a magnetic drain plug; it isn't as if the magnet is going to do any thing positive for the oil, errr, unless your oil filter has utterly failed. Long story short, magnetic drain plug are a complete waste of money.

Welcome another oil purity fanatic. Yeah, the Dimple mag plugs should be the ticket.

I'd like to offer some basis for an opinion, but don't have any real evidence.
So, go with your own gut feel - bet it'll work out best.
Also, hope you hang around the forum...

  1. It is the filter's job to remove metals and other solids large enough to do any damage to the engine from the oil.
  2. Given the light weight alloys modern engines are built from, most metals held in suspension in the oil are non ferrous, and as such, the magnet is worthless.

I have to agree with Shipo on these points in regards to the engine oil drain plug.
