I just recently bought my 2000 Honda accord from an owner who told me that the timing belt needed to be done, only have my mechanic tear apart my car to find that the timing belt had in fact been changed at some point (the belt on it was not original & it looked pristine).

I had him change both the belt & water pump anyways, because I was going to incur the cost of his labor at that point... and there was no way to now when it had last been done, because the previous owner obviously hadn't tracked it.

It's expensive, but I would suggest having it done. At least you'll know where you're starting from

PS - my cost was $560.00 including Honda belt & water pump (in Canada by a trusted mechanic). Closest Honda dealership quoted me $1,000.00 for just the belt change.
