Default Manual Shifter Reverse Lockout

My son has 2000 Accord ULEV 4 door sedan EX model with 5 speed manual transmission and 4 cylinder motor.
Last night he could not get reverse but all forward gears work fine and shift smoothly.
Honda told him this was common with Accords and that there is likely a burr on the reverse lockout mechanism of the shifter.

Has anyone experienced this and can a do it yourselfer fix this at home?
I restored my Corvette but have never worked on his Honda.
Hethinks the shift mechanism can be removed from the transmission without removing the motor and transmission from the car.
Any suggestions on what th eproblem is here and how to fix it without getting the dealer involved?
Thank you in advance,
Kurt

weekends are slower times on this board...apparently most people do this when they should be working...just be patient.

I've never heard of that. Sometimes the gears dont line up right and you have to put it in another gear first to help line em up. Or let the car roll a little.

Have you tried letting the clutch out a little bit to enable it to go into reverse - sometimes mine doesn't want to go into reverse and I have to do this. Also try shifting to 5th (stopped) then pull it down into reverse with the clutch still depressed.
