Default MPG: Previous Accords Vs New!

How the MPG is much more higher for the older Accords then the new ones?

This is a really loaded question; my Dad has my wifes old 88 Lx 1/4 million miles[carbed] and got 36 mpg on a 400 miletrip.I know he was running the A/C cause I fixed it when I was there in July.
But consider a car that has not been serviced very well and could well have poor compression, orcarboned upintake valves, carb dumping, filthy injectors.
All kinds of factors come into play.
Also different emission control systems.

Careful... Somewhere in there, the US-EPA revised their testingprocedures or something.
