New Accord, need to add oil! Which?
According to Mobil Exxon (that makes Honda 5W-20 oil), the oil does not have any synthetic in the oil. And the factory fill doesn't have anything extra added to the oil for break-in.
Most good auto engines today call for 10W-30 oil, not 5W-20. And in Australia, Honda recommends 10W-30 oil for the Accord engines (they don't have to worry about CAFE down under since that is only a U.S. Gov't thing.
I will be making our first oil/filter change in our 2006 Accord around 2500-3000 miles as I want those metal wear particles out of the engine. I will probably useChevron or Valvoline 10W-30 and then when the engine is broken in around 5000-6000 miles go with a 10W-30 synthetic (which ever brand is on sale for $3.99 a qt.) I will be using a Mobil 1 filter with the synthetic filter material.
I have used just about every brand of 10W-30 dino oil in our 1987 Chev. Celebrity with the 2.5L engine and it has over 251,000 miles on it. Oil and filter changes have been at 3000-4000 miles. The spark plugs with 60,000 miles were changed about two weeks ago and the electrode and the ceramic insulator did not have any carbon on them. I can only wish our new Honda will do as well!!!!

G'Day,
In the US model Accords Honda specifically states that the original factory break in oil does indeed have "special" additives. I do agree that the 5W20 is a US only thing but it is proving to be a very sound and robust oil.
I changed to Mobil 1 0W20 around 3200 miles and never looked back. Now a bit over 20K miles it uses zero oil.
