When you drain an automatic tranny, the torque converter doesn't drain. So you only get about 1/3 of the fluid...

If it was FILLED with non-genuine fluid, I'd probably change it 3 times & drive around (5 miles?) inbetween. Does it shift harshly now? You can probably judge by the shifting quality & decide whether to change it 3 vs. 4 times?

It depends on how much non-Honda fluid was added.

ORIGINAL: drummer1279

I use AMSOIL ATF in my 92. it used to hunt between 4th gear and overdrive even with Z-1 ATF. It stopped when I put the AMSOIl in.
Hey, that's exactly what mine's been doing! Adjusting the tranny cable helped, but it still just won't stay in OD under a real light load at 60+ mph. When I changed mine, I used Dexron and some sort of additive from Napa that's supposed to make it "high friction" or something like that.

Is the Amsoil synthetic? If so, even better. Anything special for a Honda in the Amsoil line, or just plain ATF?

Thanks!

AMSOIL is completely synthetic, and no they dont have any special brand for honda just AMSOIL ATF. but like I said I put it in my tranny and it quit hunting gears, and I just past 200k on the original tranny.

Thanks for information, guys!

Shift is not bad yet, just think about long term potential problem now. Anyway, may change it twice with true Honda fluid. Just to play safe. So scaried about failed tranny!
