Did the scan tool "light up" and then tell you it didn't read?
I've seen where some of them won't "talk" if you have it plugged in - tool lights up - but don't turn the key to "on"/pos II within a set amount of time.
What issue are you having - sound like the MIL is on - but descibe the issue. Recent work done to the car?

You still have not said if you had the key in the on position? Remember, plug the scan tool in, turn the key to the "ON" position so all the dash lights are on but the car is not running. Wait for the computers to talk to each other, and then depending on the scanner go through the the proper key strokes to read the codes.
If by chance you have a really old scanner it may not read it, likely wise if you are using a Sanp-On scanner from years ago and it does not have the updated chip or you have the wrong chip in it then it may not read.
If it ends up not being operator error and there is in fact a problem with the OBDII then it might be worth talking with your local dealer to see what they can do. Reason being they might be able to cover some or all of the cost...
