Oil down 1 quart after >5K miles
I change my oil in my 2000 Accord 4 cylinder every 5k miles. Normally, I down about 1/2 quart after this mileage. I just turned 190K miles and after a 4K+ mile trip and some local driving, I noticed that I used a quart. I've heard people talk about using Marvel Mystery oil to clean the engine and reduce oil usage. As anyone used this product and does it work? I'm not too concerned about using the additional 1/2 quart because I did push the car hard for the entire trip. Kept it around 80 MPH and as I understand, anything around 3k RPM you will use more oil.
I dont like any of those oil products, they seem to just gunk up the engine to me. As you said a quart over 5k miles isnt the worst it could be. I would just make sure there are no leaks, and just keep an eye on it.
Suggest checking the PCV valve and hoses to make sure they are working correctly. Gummed up PCV valve will cause oil vapors from crankcase to be pushed into air intake duct through PCV air intake (normal flow is into crankcase).
1 qt/5K miles is excellent overall. Some oil is always consumed, but consumption may be masked by gasoline vapor contamination of oil (this is why you change the oil). Long trip w/ full time hot oil prevents most gas contamination so oil consumption seems higher.
good luck

Thanks. I changed out the PCV valve last year. My biggest concern is the amount of gunk that is in the oil pan, especially after all of these miles. I've owned this car since new and have never went over 5k w/o changing the oil and filter. I know that Honda recommends that you do not use any additives to this engine, so I'll just keep up with the normal service.

MMO is helpful to reduce oil consumption but not as an additive. Instead, MMO is poured into the combustion chambers and soaks coked rings, for hours or days at a time. With your maintenance schedule and oil consumption the rings are definitely not coked.
I replaced oil pan gasket on my 94 EX when it had over 240K miles and found no sludge in oil pan. This car had oil changes that range from 3k-5k miles. If you've had good service you should be OK.
good luck

This, especially @ 80mph. Any big elevation changes? Lots of mountain coasting creates high vacuum and sucks oil past the rings and valve guide seals.Have you dropped the pan to verify? With that tight change schedule I'd bet that the pan is really clean, regardless of the mileage.

I was driving through the mountains in Kentucky, West Virginia, Pennsylvania and Maryland so there was a lot of elevation changes.
Good to hear that your oil pan was clean after 240K, I have been diligent in changing my oil, so I should be in good shape. The high mileage was what I was concerned about. Thanks, I appreciate your feedback. I should be good for another 200K.
I add 1/2 qt every 750 miles and car runs fine other than this usage.
No plans to address it at 225,000 miles on '92 Accord.
Marvel Mystery Oil / STP is from a bygone era; let it stay there.
