Default Oil Leak

Hey all, great site thank you. Question I have a 1993 accord EX 2.2 4 cyl I just bought and it is leaking oil. The guy I bought it from said it needed a new O ring that goes behind the filter. I took the part away from block (30mm nut) and replaced the O ring, the old one did look somewhat flat in some areas so I thought this would cure the leak. put it back together and still have a leak. at first I thought it was coming from the the block plug located just below the filter (looks like it has a star type head) but seems to be coming from the same place it was leaking. Is it possible the whole unit where the O ring fits into needs to be replaced ??? Or should I have used rtv or something. Thanks for all reply's

Can you possibly post a picture of the leak and the surrounding area?

I will try and post a picture soon. maybe if I explain more detail you will know. after I removed the oil filter there is a nut (30mm) that the filter attaches to that holds on the part in question. it has what I think is the oil supply (or return) line attached to it. on this part there is a O ring that seals it to the block. thanks for any reply

it sounds like you just need a new oil filter or perhaps it's leaking from the oil pressure sending unit located just above the oil filter...

The part you replaced is located UNDER the oil filter?

OK after looking in a manual I guess the part with the O ring was the oil cooler. it said to coat the o ring with oil which I did not maybe that is why its still leaking. or maybe the sending unit as you said. I will look at it again. do you think I should get another o ring or just try and reseal and maybe tighten more ? could the oil cooler be bad I mean do they wear out or crack ? does the sending unit just screw in the block (as a chevy would). thanks for the replies Tony and sir nasty

Default RE: Oil Leak

Ok update on my oil leak, turns out it was the sending unit. the old one was a thumb type screw on. meaning finding a socket to fit it was the biggest problem (limited tools) 1 1/8 '. after I got it off I put thread tape on and it took awhile to screw in before it started to feel tight I kept having visions off the thing snaping off. but all is well and no leaks (burning on exhaust). I just bought the car for 1,800.00 One owner with 128,000 miles. I was going to get rid of it if the oil leak could not be corrected. I think I will hang on to it for awhile now with gas in the Tampa area at $ 3.40 gallon. the only thing I dont like about the car now is the tranny seems kind of jerky with the gas pedal any slight touch of the gas makes the car jerk. the other accords I have owned were not like this. thanks for all your help. I will be checking in alot.

Thumbs up Oil cooler O ring

Even though the O ring was not the source of your leak, it's REALLY good that you replaced it. Mine went one extremely cold winter morning after leaking slowly for some time (undiagnosed but for the oil burning on the exhaust). There was so much oil under the car that I thought I struck it rich like the Beverly Hill Billies. Anyhow, it would have leaked a bit and then broken, at which time all of your oil would have been on the ground in about 23 seconds, unless you were driving, in which case a lot of people behind you would have lost traction and maybe died in the resulting crashes. Amazing how a cheap little O ring that is so easy to replace can prevent all that! Lastly, if your car has no rust and was reasonably well cared for, be prepared to have it for a while. It's a great little ride!

Default DBL CHK your work

As you found out from doing the job the first time, it's an easy task. I would take it apart and check that no debris is in the O ring channel, that all surfaces are clean, and that the post that attaches the cooler is tight, but not too tight as it is prob not the strongest thing on the car. a new O ring will cure the leak if it is coming from behind the oil cooler. BUT FIRST, Clean the whole area really well, drive or run engine for a bit, and see where the oil shows up first. I don't recall if the cooler has a definite mounting position. Good luck and let us all know.
