Oil leak mechanic quote?
Hello all
So while having the car for something unrelated, my guy told me I have an oil leak coming from the timing belt housing area and that it maybe the camshaft seal. I'm not sure he's investigating thoroughly. He guessed around $700 as he should do the timing belt also.....seems steep to me, especially if it is just the camshaft seal.
I haven't really seen any oil under the car so I'm not sure what exactly he's referring to.
If I traced it to the camshaft seal and just replaced that, shouldn't be too big of a job right? I couldn't find the procedure in the DIY section. Could me and my trusty Haynes manual get the job done? I'm proficient enough to perform all fluid replacements, throttle body cleaning etc, and bodywork, but haven't done much beyond that so far...
Any advice greatly appreciated...

That is a fair price to replace the timing belt and leaking seals. How many miles are on your engine? Did that quote include the water pump, seals, tensioner pulleys (depending on mileage)?
To replace a cam seal, you will have to remove the timing belt, remove the cam sprocket, then replace the seal, then reinstall the timing belt. It isn't simple and you don't want to mess this up. If your timing belt is due for a change soon, then this is a good time to get all of this stuff done at once, since the seals under the timing belt require the belt to be removed.

We didn't go into detail, but he didn't mention all the other things you did - just the timing belt - this car is at 170,000 miles.
Sounds like something I'll have to have him do in the very near future then...for now, I don't even see oil under the car so I'll just keep a close eye on the oil level
Thanks again
