Default Quote from dealer $11,000 What should I do?

Hi,

My 2005 Odyssey 60,000 mile is make some noise when accelerating. I took it to the dealer thinking it may be the muffler.
(noise make the car sound more like my Acura TL, the noise is not very loud)

Dealer called back in an hour said:

"Noise is from the engine (lower part POSS Engine Main bearing)" "Recommended engine ASSY (LONG BLOCK) "
ESTIMATE $10,950

I am kind of speechless. What kind of driving cause a $11k dmg. I always change Oil and do the maintenance from the dealer on time. This seem strange to me a 7 year old Honda would cost this much to fix. Is the dealer crazy? Or an engine block does go bad around 7 years and cost this much to fix?

thanks

That's more than the car is worth. Get a second opinion and if accurate, get another car.

If you had your car serviced at Honda, I would ask for some help. This is totally a Honda problem so they should give you some support. I had a front seal go on my Honda S2000 transmission. The oil had leaked into the bell housing area and although the car was 7 years old and 48K miles, they only charged me for parts. They changed the front tranny seal, the clutch PP, TO bearing, and pilot bearing.

You could buy a nice used car for $11,000. Go get your car and tell the dealer to take a hike. '

Hopefully the car is paid off?

First, I agree w/ the need for a 2nd opinion. But supposing they are right, the cost of engine replacement can be reduced as follows.

You should be able to buy a used engine for ~ $1000 shipped (ebay and car-part.com).

I've found that installation generally runs about the same as engine cost so perhaps another $1000 for installation.

You should be able to get home and dry for < $3000 w/ ease.

If you're happy w/ the car, this is way to go.

Find a mechanic who had installed this engine in a Acura or Honda product.

good luck

Have you tried asking this same question on another forum specific to Odysseys as this forum is for Accord owners? I would suggest going here:
Honda Odyssey Forum : Odyssey Minivan Forums I belong to it as I also own an Ody.

even at the highest labor time listed X 120.00/hour (2400.00) and the cost of the complete engine 3000.00 +/- you're still under 6k, ask for a detailed description/estimate of what they want to do...but it really sounds like they don't want to do it...my .02
