Default Overheating help

Im having an issue with my 94 accord. It only seems to heat up when the car is not moving. When it is driving it cools back down but at a stop light the temp starts to rise. I need help with this problem.

I moved your post to the General Tech Help section.

Please do not post help question in the DIY section.

First thing, are your fans working? When was the last time your coolant was changed? Is your radiator clogged?

Yes i can hear and feel the fans kick on but they come on for about 5 seconds and shut off. This repeats itself over and over.

1. Is the coolant level full in the radiator?

2. When was the coolant last changed (like Wazari asked)?

3. When the fans run, do they run strongly or weakly?

4. With A/C turned on, do both fans at the radiator run? The fan on the driver’s side is the A/C condenser fan and the fan on the passenger side is the radiator fan.

5. Follow the lower radiator hose to the engine. The lower radiator hose is attached to the thermostat housing on the engine block. There is a fan switch (thermo-switch A) there. Disconnect the electrical connector (usually a green connector) from the switch. With a small paper clip or wire, jump the terminals on the electrical connector and turn the ignition to ON. Does the fans run?

If the fans turn on in some of the above checks; but, keep shutting off every 5 seconds like you stated, it can be a problem with the radiator fan control module (located behind the glove compartment), wiring, connector, or a malfunctioning radiator fan relay.

The radiator fan relay and power window relay can be swapped to see if there is any difference.
