You can also check the resistance with a VOM. If I remember correctly there shouldn't be any. But of course, it could still be bad and show no resistance, so I didn't suggest that earlier. Do what Jimblake & deserthonda said. It's super easy.

I've had this same thing happen to me every year. If the temp drops below about 50F the light will come on if I touch the brake pedal. It stays on for a while then goes off until I apply the brakes again. Since it happens before the temps go below freezing, I'd say it's not the freezing problem. I'm going to check the master cylinder cover mentioned above. Wow, this forum is awesome.
