Default Performance upgrades suggestions?

Hey guys I'm new here Im going to get a 2000 honda accord probably an EX version next year. I am wondering once I have purchased one with the help of a mechanic to check the car's conditions. What should I upgrade first in your opinion in terms of performance. I was thinking of starting off with an AEM cold air intake system once ive settled with the car, anyone else have a few suggestions on first upgrades?
Thanks!

Welcome to HAF.

Most of us deal with Accords - but the civic is close enough

I like the fact the first thing you are doing is having it checked out and taking care of the normal stuff first. You have to start with a "good base" before going for any "more".

Intake, and exhaust are some normal basic mod's.

A good base means that everything else - normal stuff - is taken care of.

Any tune up items that can't be verified as to when they were last changed - consider them due and take care of it. Have the brakes, suspension, ect checked.

A few things you want to check into - timing belt replacment, you want to know when it was last changed. If the "seller" cannot verify when it was last done, I'd use that as a point when coming to a price for the car.

If it is an auto trans - you want to know the fluid change history.

A lot depends on if its manual or automatic.

Also what your overall goals and budget are for it.

Sorry to not include that In the post but it'll be manual transmission. My budget I don't have exact numbers for yet but it'll be in the mid range as I'm a student but I've also saved up quiet a bit.

I'm not going to be taking the car to the tracks yet probably, because it will be my first car but I just want a nice, smooth ride I can be satisfied with on the streets

Well if it is a manual trans you are good to go. Some of the 98-02 Accords with an auto trans were....well let just say " a gamble".

Again, don't think the fluid in the manual trans doesn't need to be changed. It does, so back to what I said by assume any service that cannot be documented is do and have it done - then you have a "base" to go/build from.
