Default Power steering burning

My car, a 1989 Accord, can only hold power steering fluid for about a month. It usually leaves out when I am in reverse. Today I put some more in because I was out and when I got home and noticed that I had a lot of smoke coming out from under the hood. Why and how might this be my power steering fluid? What can be done?
