Default Power Steering Pump

Hello - First time on a Honda Forum. I bought a 2007 Honda Accord last summer with 119,000 original miles. Very clean. My question is a few months ago, I noticed a little drag in my steering. After checking the fluid, I saw it was quite low. I added "HONDA" power steering fluid, and up until recently, there was a whining noise which began to get louder and louder. I kept adding fluid as needed and then stopped at a local shop to have them look at. They said it was the power steering pump and agreed to have them replace it. They tried not 1, not 2 but 3 installs of rebuilt pumps which kept failing according to them. I agreed to a new pump and when they installed it they realized their was also a leak in rackin pinion. I didn't seem to have issue with the r&p with tough steering and all the other signs that come along with a bad r&p. My question is, do you think the mechanic is trying to make some extra money? Its not a cheap replacement as most of you know. He doens't have the best reviews either. Could they have inadvertently damaged the r&p when they put the new power steering pump in? Also, before I agree to them changing the r&p, has anyoune had any luck with power steering stop leak? Are there any other areas to look at before agreeing to replace the r&p? Thank you very much!!

Low ps fluid means you originally had a leak, because ps fluid doesn't disappear. I'd wipe down the ps lines and clean any dirt/debris/sludge from the pump and rack. Then try to find the location of the leak. Spraying with athletes for powder can help identify leaks when the white powder absorbs fluid.

I suspect the noise was from low fluid that could have damaged the original pump. Changing the pump shouldn't cause a leak in the rack and pinion.
