I have a 91 accord ex wagon and a 02 accord sedan and have been a Honda fan for years. I have been experiencing problems with my 91 wagon automatic transmission going into sport mode and not shifting out of 3rd gear. I took the tcu out and could not see any burned up resistors or capacitors. Also jumped out the connector under the glove box for codes but no codes came up. I'm at a loss for what my next step should be. I don't want to just throw parts at it. Thanks for any help.

I found replacement TCU's for $25 on car-part.com. More expensive but < $100 on ebay. There are "repair kits" for $10, but this is not a trivial repair, probably requires working on a double sided board w/ very fine conductors.

I am thinking about replacing the capacitors and resistors in my tcu, but am really wanting to confirm that the tcu is the source of my problem.
My cruise works, speedo works, no check engine light, it just goes into sport mode and stays in 3rd gear. I drove yesterday for 40 miles at 55mph and 3500rpm and then all of a sudden it quit and drove fine the next 5 miles to my house.

OK, thanks for all the previous info on tcu problems. I ordered the capacitor and resistor replacement pack. But I have been reading more and am wondering if the Trans fluid needs to be replaceed. I purchased the car after it had smacked a deer. I drove it home and saw that the Trans lines from the radiator were leaking so I replaced the radiator and added some Trans fluid I had on the shelf in the garage. It was a good quality shaefers Trans fluid I used in my 97 Chevy suburban. I keep reading that Honda Trans are really picky about only working on Honda Trans fluid only. can this be the source of my trany going into sport mode and staying there for extended periods of time intermittently.

Honda ATF is generally agreed to be best fluid for Honda AT's. I don't know if a fluid change will impact your current problem, but it's a good idea.

Please update once you've repaired your TCU on your experience and outcome.
