Generally the difference is a sunroof is steel & a moonroof is glass. The terminology isn't always absolutely consistentso you never know.

I don't have a 2008 but I'm pretty sure it's a glass panel that slides completely open OR tilts up. Then there's a shade panel you can slide shut to block off the sunlight.

Sunroof - glass that opens and slides above the roof

Moonroof - glass that opens and slides in between the roof panels.

90% of cars these days have a moonroof instead of a sunroof. I think the Scion tC still has a sunroof.

A few of my former cars illustrate...
Terminology in bold comes from the respective manufacturer's literature.

1974 BMW steel sunroof slides under the roofto open.
1986 Jetta steel sunroof slides under the roofto open.

1995 Integra glass moonroof tips UP & slides back above the roof.
1998 Accord glass moonroof slides under to open, also tilts up.
2001 Saab glass moonroof slides under to open, also tilts up.
2005 Saab glass moonroof slides under to open, also tilts up.

I know this is an old thread...but I've never understood the logic behind caring about that. It doesn't matter how old a thread is; this is the Internet. People today who have the same question that started the thread will still do a search, find that old thread, and if a definitive answer has not yet been provided, they'll still find it useless. And if someone can provide any new information (or, ideally, the definitive answer the OP was looking for all those years ago), then that person's post is similarly still useful.

*Steps gingerly down off soapbox*

Now then: cars.com agrees with JimBlake. It says:

A sunroof is typically a solid body-colored panel that can manually tilt up or be removed. A sunroof is an opaque metal panel, and you can’t see through it. From the outside, it looks like a body-colored metal panel.

A moonroof is a type of sunroof, except that it’s a transparent, sliding, tinted glass panel. This panel is not removable.

Other websites seem to concur.

So the shortest possible answer...would probably be a caveman's:

SUNROOF METAL. MOONROOF GLASS.

The sunroof in my 1965 VW Notchback slides into the rear half of the roof (manually cranks into it). It's also a steel panel, with headliner material on the inside.

Right. The determining factor in whether it's a sunroof or a moonroof is not where the panel slides to, but what it's made of. If it's metal, it's a sunroof; if it's glass, it's a moonroof. Simple as that.
