Red face Quick dumb question: is 5 quarts oil too much?

Dealers always put 5 quarts of oil in my V6 engine, which is supposed to have 4.5 quarts. The result shows on the dipstick:

--------min------max
------< |---------| >========

Oil is up to here..............^

Is this enough to cause any long-term damage? Should I complain with them next time? Did some googling and found no definite answer. Thanks!

IMO, it should never go over the full mark. It might not hurt anything (foam up), but don't take that chance.

The marks are there for a reason; remove some.

Thanks. I can't believe the dealers do this all the time. I'll have to make sure they put in the correct amount next time.

oil frothing puts air in the oil that reduces the protection qualities.

agree. I believe there's usually plenty of clearance between the oil level and the rotating engine parts to avoid whipping / frothing.

example: old Pontiac Fieros had some problem with oil something, so the factory recommended solution was to add a full extra qt of oil at change; son had one of these cars and never an indication of frothing.

Mmmmm, so I guess I'll let them put 5 quarts in then. I am paying for the oil too so I would certainly prefer that the extra .5 quart doesn't cause any harm...
