Real world MPG for 98-02 LX with VTEC?
Hi all,
Newbie considering 4cyl AT Accord LX with Vtec engine purchase. 98-02 years. Several women in my neighborhood reccommend it, but don't know or care what their MPG is. Must be a guy thing. Currently drive 88 Camry that consistently gives me 34-36 MPG combo at 70/30 Highway. 37-39 MPG 90/10 highway and conditions perfect.
Similar MPG is critical for me as I drive 30-35K miles per year. I drive granny style. Is it realistic to duplicate low/mid 30's MPG combo, upper 30's highway? I read Longhornjohn's post with his 06 Accord getting 36+MPG and was encouraged.
Other posts with similar Accords are only showing upper 20's to 30-31. What are other 98-02 owners experiencing?
Thanks everybody,

RE: Real world MPG for 98-02 LX with VTEC?
We own a '98 Accord coupe 4cyl Vtec 2.2l w/5speed with 134k miles. We just returned from a trip to Glacier and most gas stops resulted in 37 -38mpg with a high of 40. Around town my wife gets 32. She is a little agressive on the throttle and doesn't use the initeria of the car to brake, using the brake at the last moment to stop. I don't drive that way and the higher trip mpgs were with my driving. Speeds on open roads were 75 - 80 mph.
This is an unbelievable vehicle for fuel consumption, however I must caution that agressive driving will certainly result in less mpg.
Yep.... performance and mgp is a guy thing. Women seldom understand the workings of a car and are about as interested as we are in tole painting. Excuse me if I've offended any women on this forum. My daughter with the 94 Probe GT loves cars and does most of her mechanical repairs. I think she is one of the few exceptions.
