Default Recommend a good set of Basic tools?

I have recently decided that I would like to do all maintenance on my car short of a engine or transmission overhaul (don't worry I got the service manual). I need some tools though. Can anyone suggest a set that would allow me to do most things? (including compressor, alternator, water pump replacement, minor suspension type jobs) I am assuming I will need a decent torque wrench but what range? Would a socket set be sufficient or do I need wrenches which a specific shape to them?
